Classic Blue: 2020 Pantone Color of the Year
The Pantone Color Institute just revealed the 2020 Color of the Year; a deep blue shade that’s at once comfortable and relatable, PANTONE 19-4052 Classic Blue.
As we enter the beginning of a decade, it is no doubt that it will bring more challenges. The Classic Blue color is no doubt the perfect response to collective anxiety in the upcoming decade.
THE RELATABLE BLUE
Laurie Pressman, the Vice President of the Pantone Color Institute explained the significance behind the annual Color of the Year announcement and how it relates to the culture at large.
“The Pantone Color of the Year highlights the relationship between trends in color and what is taking place in our global culture at a moment in time, a color that reflects what individuals feel they need that color can hope to answer,” Pressman said. “As society continues to recognize color as a critical form of communication, and a way to express and effect ideas and emotions, designers and brands should feel inspired to use color to engage and connect.
The Pantone Color of the Year selection provides strategic direction for the world of trend and design, reflecting the Pantone Color Institute’s year-round work doing the same for designers and brands.”
And as if its reasons behind choosing the calming color weren’t enough, Pantone also said: “As technology continues to race ahead of the human ability to process it all, it is easy to understand why we gravitate to colors that are honest and offer the promise of protection. Non-aggressive and easily relatable, the trusted PANTONE 19-4052 Classic Blue lends itself to relaxed interaction. Associated with the return of another day, this universal favorite is comfortably embraced.”

BLUE AS A UNIVERSAL ADMIRED COLOR
Colors carry meaning for us, and that meaning can be both innate or acquired. Essentially, blue is the color of clear communication, and this is because almost everybody can recognize it.
Survey shows that blue is one of the best selling color shades for interior design and architecture and even to modern corporate culture— all things that have spread worldwide in recent history, and have gone into warp-drive with the advent of the internet.
For over 20 years, Pantone has been a huge influence on product development and purchasing decisions in multiple industries, including fashion, home furnishings, industrial design, as well as product design and graphic design.
The Pantone Color of the Year selection process requires thoughtful consideration and trend analysis. To arrive at the selection each year, Pantone’s color experts at the Pantone Color Institute comb the world looking for new color influences. This can include the entertainment industry and films in production, traveling art collections and new artists, fashion, all areas of design, popular travel destinations, as well as new lifestyles, playstyles, and socio-economic conditions. Influences may also stem from new technologies, materials, textures, and effects that impact color, relevant social media platforms and even upcoming sporting events that capture worldwide attention.
Planning to renovate your place this new upcoming decade for a brand new ambiance and a fresh start in life? Perhaps this relatable blue will transform your home in a more elegant way.
