You hurriedly rushed out of the office as you saw the sky turned into an overcast of gloomy, dark clouds. Then droplets started falling. Few at first, within a short time it turned into a heavy downpour. There was a wall of water raining down you could hardly see-through. As the bus arrived, you sat down by the window seat and looked at the droplets racing down. The roofs of the cars danced with spray and as you hear the murmuring of the rain through the window.

It sounded like a perfect Ghibli movie scene, but in reality, you’re stuck in a waiting shed as you watch the streets being flooded. Waiting for a ride is a pain since riding a bus is like an Olympic competition. While we battle the harsh rainy forces from the outside, the rainy season may bother your daily activities and also damage your home.

As our homes take most of the beating when the rainy season has come to full force. Rain is responsible for major home construction fees. A few simple home renovations will surely do the job. But you’ll surely question yourself, “Where do I start?” Here are some import words of advice that we gathered only just for you.

CHECK ROOFS AND CEILINGS

Leakages are the usual reasons for a home renovation since it’s pretty much taken for granted. Think about it, when was the last time you checked holes in your roof and ceiling? Don’t worry almost everyone forgets to check their ceilings. But checking it in advance may save you a lot of headaches especially financially.

But what if the rain started to pour and only to find out you have leaks? Well, locate where the leaks are and plug them. Some leaks can be remdied by quick-dry water stoppers. It is also recommended to plug the leaks from inside of your house. But when the leaks comes from the edges and crawls through the ceiling, it will be more difficult to identify the leak. If the wind and rain are not too strong, you can still apply sealant on the suspected source of leaks.

But what happens when your whole ceiling started to degrade after years of rain leaks? The common solution is which leaks are coming from the roof before fixing the ceiling. After changing the ceiling, replace it with cement boards or PVC materials. According to an architect, PVC is the most versatile material against constant weather beatings. It comes in an array of finishes. Cement boards also have weather-resistant qualities.

CHECK WINDOWS

As the rains hit down hard, weak windows are more prone to breaking thus damaging the interior of your home. Condominium windows were designed to be fairly waterproof so they wouldn’t leak during the rain. However, in the case of some renovations, ensuring that the windows are water-proof and leak-free might have been over-looked, hence all the bothersome dripping.

Window leaks are common in aging homes. Windows becomes non air-tight or waterproof after years of extreme temperatures and varying weather conditions. Window frames become damaged, glazing seals break or the entire unit can become out of square. Many people notice water on their windows even when it is not raining and assume there is a leak somewhere. Chances are it simply windows condensation.

Interior window condensation is caused by excessive moisture in the house. Exterior window condensation is simply dew and occurs when the window is colder than the dew point. Condensation between window panes occurs when the seal between the panes is broken or when the drying agent inside the windows is saturated.

While seemingly costly, this saves you from making possible mistakes by doing it on your own. Installing new and sturdier windows and doors not only protects your home from the elements, it increases your property’s value as well.

For a short-term solution, it’s simple to fix your window seals. Start with an inexpensive caulking gun from your local hardware store. Examine the window all around the frame to see if you can detect the leak. You may need to remove any old caulk and paint, which you can do with a putty knife, large screwdriver, or stiff brush. Make sure the area is dry, so you don’t seal in moisture. (Courtesy of MroGlass)

RUSTPROOF YOUR METALS

With that in mind, the best way to rust proof one’s house is by installing rust-resistant materials. Top of the list should be aluminium windows and aluminium doors. Remember that alimunim is different aluminium. It is scientifically proven that aluminium is rust resistant due to its unique chemical composition. Unlike other metals such as steel and iron, aluminium does not react to moisture. Therefore, this makes aluminium doors and aluminium windows a very viable option for your house. Rustproof is all about ensuring that rust has not lee way into your home. In other words, it is all about ensuring all parts of your house comprise of rust resistant material. Therefore, one should seriously consider utilizing aluminium doors and aluminium windows for all rooms in the home. (Sigmadoors)

BE CAUTIOUS TO THE WOODEN PARTS OF YOUR HOME

Truth be told, moisture can be sometimes bad. Wood is hygroscopic, meaning it attracts and holds water which causes swelling to make room for the extra fluid. Moisture is bad for all types of solid and engineered wood floors, as well as bamboo floors. Apart from the damage it can do to the surface- stains and discoloration – moisture causes wood to swell, and when that happens the floor can be ruined.  If you can’t dry things out, you may end up having to replace the flooring.

When the wooden board started to lift higher than the centerm the warping result is called cupping. Cupping happens when water soaks in through the bottom of a board. It may be hard to notice since the bottom swells but the face doesn’t. According to Chris Daziel, an expert in design and trade, one of the remedies for cupping is to sand the floor flat, but if the wood is finished before it has a chance to dry out, the face might swell and lift higher than the edges – a condition called crowning.

Home renovation may sound a pain in the ass. But investing for your comfort is of the luxuries in life we shouldn’t taken for granted. Ask yourself, ‘is this the way I would like my home to look for the next years to come?’. If you can’t answer with an immediate ‘yes’, then it’s time for home renovation.
