Ever wonder how Makati was before it became the country’s premier central business district? Believe it or not, the grandeur that is Makati today used to be a swampland during the pre-Hispanic settlements. The name “Makati” was actually a misnomer when Don Miguel Lopez de Legaspi, founder of Manila, set foot in the land and thought “Makati na, Kumati na.” or the tide has ebbed away was the response of the locals to his query concerning the name of the place. From Pio del Pilar’s focal point of opposition against the Spanish, San Pedro de Makati was added to the province of Rizal when Americans took control of Luzon with Fort Bonifacio, then William Mckinley, as a military reservation. Fast forward to Ayala y Compania’s active contribution to the modernization of the Makati that we know now, it was eventually rebranded as the country’s financial capital in the 1960s and became a part of the National Capital Region in 1975. Since then, the bustling city of Makati has always been associated as a thriving cosmopolitan area and the country’s financial hub. Indeed, Makati has proven through time that it is the embodiment of the saying “from grass to class”.

“A people’s relationship to their heritage is the same as the relationship of a child to its mother.” – John Henrik Clarke

Although Makati has no historic trace of any urban fabric, it has fully evolved as a breeding ground for daunting skyscrapers and high-end commercial districts. With our ceaseless journey towards a streamlined future, it is noteworthy to take a step back and reminisce about the heritage that has shaped the very land that is spearheading the country’s economic trajectory. Just outside of Makati’s Central Business District is this 70-year-old building hiding in the verdant streets of La Campana. Covered in a foliage of aged colossal trees, the path leading to this historic structure breathes a scene straight out of Makoto Shinkai’s dreamy animation. Its strategic location next to the then pristine but now biologically dead Pasig River, sets nature as one of the main driving forces for the theme of this interior design firm in Makati.

Initially designed as a medical building in 1961, Nelia King, wife of the founder of Mighty Corporation which currently operates in the nearby establishment, bought the area to shelter their office workers in the second floor while the ground was used as a clinic for medical services. Previously owned by the Soriano family of San Miguel Corporation (SMC) during the late 1950s, the late Wong Chu King, founder of La Campana, the first Filipino cigarette manufacturer, rented the area as a factory for their product. With no architects commissioned for the design of the building, Wong Chu King was solely responsible for the blueprint of the establishment. Decades later, then late 20th century interior style of this scruffy looking building would transformed into a minimalist with a tinge of contemporary style that would serve as a sanctuary for this luxury Japanese interior design firm in Makati.

It goes without saying that Japanese style commercial designs for establishments whose products are related to Japan such as a ramen restaurant is an unorthodox scene. After all, the interior and overall ambiance of a place plays a major role in immersing its visitors in an experience that is beyond what is tangible. What Tokyo Grand Renovation, a luxury interior design firm in Makati, hopes for its guests is to transport them in an environment that is more than just an interior design firm selling designs but an office that sells the feeling you get upon entering a place that hits close to home. Tokyo Grand Renovation’s Zen type interior embodies minimalism and makes use of organic materials, placing high value on the comfort of both the customers and workers.

“The ability to simplify means to eliminate the unnecessary so that the necessary may speak.” - Hans Hoffman

MATCHA LOUNGE OF TOKYO GRAND RENOVATION, INTERIOR DESIGN FIRM IN MAKATI

As soon as you step foot in this interior design firm in Makati, you will be greeted by an area that looks nothing like a design and build company but more like a café. Don’t turn your back, though. You are not mistaken for this innovative Matcha Lounge is a part of Tokyo Grand Renovation’s premises. Matcha, being the principal ingredient in the Japanese tea ceremony, is deeply embedded in the Japanese culture. More than just a tea, this premium green tea powder manifests harmony, respect and tranquility. Instead of a showroom which you would normally find in any other interior design firm, Tokyo Grand Renovation constructed a Matcha lounge where people can relax and engage in interesting conversations. Once the customer has loosened up, they can head to the meeting area to finally discuss the projects with the designers. In addition, at the back of the lounge, the Great Wave Off Kanagawa (かながわ-おき なみ うら), a renowned 1831 woodblock print by Hokusai, completed the area depicting the unpredictability of waves and the strength of the seas.

"We wanted to make the people interested first before we present. To make people love the place, that is my mission. Not a showroom, but a lounge." - TGR Designer

WORK SPACES

SECOND FLOOR WORK SPACE OF TOKYO GRAND RENOVATION, INTERIOR DESIGN FIRM IN MAKATI

As for the working spaces of this interior design firm in Makati, the design is centered on the use of natural materials, earthy colors and various lighting styles. Furnishings were mainly wooden or organic showcasing the location’s deep association with nature. Colors were also predominantly neutral and calm to bring in harmony with all the other elements present in the room. As the concept of Zen interior literally translates to enlightenment and a design theory that is structured around lighting, various lighting styles were optimized. From soft artificial lighting emitted by the ceiling lights all the way to the natural light shining through the window grills.

There is another working space area situated at the ground floor next to the Matcha lounge. The entire room, which screams minimalism, splatters white as the primary color complementing it with pale wooden furnishings and white-tinted high chairs. In spite of the lack of vibrant color and bold decorations, the room harmoniously came together. Yet again, the presence of lighting is key towards perfecting the way of Zen hence, the countless windows and ceiling lights

MEETING AREA

Finally, an extension of the Matcha lounge is this Zen-type meeting area where guests would be ushered in by designers to engage in a conversation discussing their preferred interior design plans. The meeting area almost looks identical to the work space next to it with its white wall finish and neutral colored furnishings. Certainly, it wouldn’t be a Zen room if not for the existence of windows and lighting which are essential as a source of illumination.
